The iPad is a tablet computer designed and manufactured by Apple. Since the iPad was released in 2010, Apple has sold more than 67 million units of the device.
Apple has produced three iterations of the iPad, a multitouch device, similar to both the iPhone and iPod Touch. The tablet runs on Apple's mobile operating system iOS and is available in both Wi-Fi and cellular configurations. Users install applications on the device through the App Store in iTunes.
Since its introduction, the iPad has dominated the tablet market. In the first quarter of 2012, iPad sales comprised 80% of total mobile PC sales. Competitors have introduced their own challengers to the iPad in recent years, including the Blackberry Playbook, Amazon Kindle Fire and most recently, the Microsoft Surface tablet.
